Guns N' Roses - Civil War

This is a live performance by the American hard rock band Guns N' Roses doing a live performance of their song "Civil War".
The song was originally released on the 1990 compilation "Nobody's Child: Romanian Angel", but more famously in 1991 on the album "Use Your Illusion II". It's an anti-war protest song which uses the dual meaning of the word 'civil' to get the message get across. The song was written by, Axl Rose, Slash, and Duff McKagan and it was released as a single in 1993.
I really love how Slash opens the song with the intro riff from "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" by Hendrix and also ends the song on this riff. An homage to Hendrix is always welcome in my book, and it fits the song very well. It's a great song and a great performance.

Enjoy ; )

David Bowie - Fame

This is a live performance filmed by the BBC in 2000 of David Bowie performing the song "Fame" live.
The song was first released in 1975, and when it was released as a single it reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was written by David Bowie, John Lennon, and Carlos Alomar. Alomar came up with the guitar riff, Bowie wrote the lyrics, and Lennon came up with the title, he didn't have that much to do with the writing of this number, but still got a writing credit.
It's a great song with a really good groove, I really digg it.

AC/DC - Thunderstruck

This is a live performance by Australian hard rock band AC/DC playing their classic and infamous song "Thunderstruck". The performance is from their 2009 concert at River Plate which was released on Blu-ray and DVD in 2011. The concert was part of the band's tour for their "Black Ice" album.
The song "Thunderstruck" was originally released in 1990 on the album "Razor's Edge". The song is built up around a riff by Angus Young which sounds like fast tapping, but is in fact very fast picking instead. It sounds awesome!
It's a great song and exactly what hard rock is supposed to be!

Neil Young and the Bluenotes - This Note's for You

Neil young - This Note's For You by ivaxavi
This is the music video to the song "This Note's for You" from Young's album of the same name. The album was released in 1988.
The song is a comment on the commercialisation of rock 'n' roll and rock 'n' roll tours in particular. The video features a Michael Jackson look-a-like who's hair catches fire. This caused the video to, at first, being pulled of the air on MTV who had been threatened by Jackson's legal department. They did, however, bring back the video in heavy rotation when it became a hit on the Canadian music channel "MuchMusic". And it also won the 1989 MTV Video Music Award for best Music Video.
It's a great song, I really love the simple straight forward guitar riff. And Young's somewhat unique lead guitar playing really fits the song well, as well as the horn section. A great song by a great artist.

AC/DC - Stiff Upper Lip

This is a live performance by Australian rock band AC/DC playing the song "Stiff Upper Lip" live in concert.
The song appears on the band's 2000 album "Stiff Upper Lip" so it's the title track from that album. It was composed by Malcolm and Angus Young and was the first single from the album.
I really love the riff in this song. It's so simple, but so good at the same time. A truly magnificent riff composed by the Young brothers. Good old school rock 'n' roll, simple as that and it rocks!

Queen – Tie Your Mother Down

This is a live performance by British rock band Queen performing their classic song “Tie Your Mother Down” live at Wembley from 1986.
The song is written by guitarist Brain May who wrote it on holiday in Tenerife where he came up with the riff to the song on an acoustic Spanish guitar. He sung the lyrics “tie your mother down” on top of it, but at this time he considered these lyrics a joke. In a radio interview May has admitted that the main riff for the song was inspired by Rory Gallagher’s “Morning Sun” that he recorded with his first band Taste from their 1970 “On The Boards” album.
It’s a great rock ‘n’ roll song with a catchy and excellent riff that drives the song all the way through. A great song and a great performance.

Enjoy ;-)

Metallica – Enter Sandman

This is a live performance by American heavy metal band Metallica playing their infamous song “Enter Sandman”. The performance is from the British TV-show “Later with Jools Holland”.
The song is off Metallica’s 1991 album “Metallica”. It was released as the first single from the album the same year and in that way it started off several years of success and touring with this album.
The song is credited to Kirk Hammett, James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich. It is perhaps the most well known Metallica song ever and it has appeared on every Metallica live album and DVD since 1991.
The main guitar riff was suggested by Kirk Hammett and then slightly altered by Hetfield. It was one of the last songs on the album to have lyrics and the original lyrics were actually much darker and about crib death. Producer Bob Rock and Lars Ulrich asked Hetfield to try and write better lyrics for the song and thus he came up with the lyrics that ended up on the album.
It’s a great song and probably Metallica’s best crowd pleaser at gigs.

Enjoy ;-)

Lynrd Skynrd - Sweet Home Alabama

This is a live performance by Southern rock band Lynrd Skynrd playing their song "Sweet Home Alabama" live. The song originally appeared on the band's second album titled "Second Helping" which was released in 1974. The song was the second single released from the album, prior to this "Don't Ask Me No Questions" was released and the third single of the album was "Free Bird".
The song was surrounded by controversy due to the fact that it was written as a reply to a song by Neil Young. Also the lyrics were interoperated by the public media to "support" or at least reference a former governor of Alabama who was pro segregation. I could write much more about this, but I don't feel like it's necessary. I'm not American nor was I around when this controversy occurred. To me it's always simply been a good song with lyrics that you can sing along to and a great instantly recognisable guitar riff. Now that's the recipe for a good song in my book.

Led Zeppelin - Black Dog

This is a live performance by British rock band Led Zeppelin playing the song "Black Dog" released in 1971. This performance is from 1975.
The song appears on Led Zeppelin's 1971 album "Led Zeppelin IV". The main riff of the song is attributed to bassist John Paul Jones who wrote it with the intention of doing a song people couldn't groove and dance to. He thought that with the complex rhythm changes and progressive riff that this would be accomplished. The song is named after a nameless black Labrador retriever who wandered around the studio at the time of recording. The lyrics are completely unrelated to the dog. Robert Plant did the vocals in two takes.
It's a great song and one of many instantly recognizable Zeppelin tracks. They had something with their riffs and rhythm that just made them unique and gave them a sound like no other band.
Truly a great song and performance.

Guns N' Roses - Dead Horse

This is the music video to the song "Dead Horse" by Guns N' Roses. The song appears on the 1991 release "Use Your Illusion I".
The song starts out with a slow acoustic piece with a riff written by singer Axl Rose. Then the electric guitars hits with a much heavier sound which dominates the song until the end where the intro is reprised for another bar. The song ends with an effect of fast-forwarding the song.
The music video was made in 1993 and it features live footage and behind the scenes footage sliced together with fast edits and cuts. The video appears on the "Welcome to the Videos" compilation.
I think it's a very good song and a pretty good video, though some what a model that's been seen before. I like the grand scale of the song and the climatic end that then reprises into the intro repeated.

The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army & Death Letter

This is a live performance from the Grammy Awards, don't know what year, haven't looked into that. They play their probably most recognizable song from their career "Seven Nation Army". The song was released as a single in 2003 and was the opening track for the band's album titled "Elephant". The song reached the tops of modern rock charts and also won a Grammy Award for best Rock Song in 2004.
The song is known for it's lower register toned bassy guitar riff. It is in fact a riff that sounds like a bass, but it's played on guitar. Jack uses his semi-acoustic 1950's style guitar and runs it through a Digitech Whammy Pedal that drops it one octave giving the sound it's bassy guitar riff.
The song is played in Open A tuning, and he uses slide on it which I think just sounds amazing.
Towards the middle of the performance there's a break and they start playing their version of the classic blues song "Death Letter". I really like this version and I love how agressive Jack's slide playing is, I really love it and you can hear the roots dating back to Son House. I earlier posted Son House's version of Death Letter CLICK HERE for that performance. It's a great performance from a great band.

AC/DC - Highway to Hell

This is a live performance from 2010 by Australian hard rock band AC/DC playing their classic song "Highway to Hell".
The song was originally released as a single in 1979 and is the opening track for the album of the same name. The main guitar riff was conceived by Angus Young and the song was written by Angus Young, Bon Scott and Malcolm Young.
The origin of the lyrics were an interview where Angus kiddingly stated that being constantly on tour is like "a fucking highway to hell".
It is undeniably one of the most iconic and best hard rock songs in history, and I think this live performance is impressive. The guys might be getting older, but they sure as hell still rock the stage and give one hell of an energetic performance. A great song, and a great performance.

Joe Satriani - Summer Song

This is a live performance by guitarist Joe Satriani. He plays his 1992 song "Summer Song" live, the performance in this video is from 2006. The song was released on the album "The Extremist" which got quite a lot of radio play and helped Satriani getting his solo career of the ground.
It's a great up-tempo rock song with a happy vibe that just brings good vibrations to the air particles it's moving. It really is a hard rock/rock 'n' roll song in the style of Satriani. He uses a wide combo of licks and techniques, but they aren't all difficult techniques and if you listen carefully you'll hear that he even throws in a Chuck Berry riff at one point.
I also love the ending where Satriani literally sustains a note where it pretty much seems like he could sustain it forever, if he wanted to. As Nigel Tufnel would say; "The sustain, listen to it.[...]you can just hold it and you can go have a bite, you'll still be hearing that one". Spinal Tap joke, gotta love that film!!
This is a great song, and an awesome performance.

Whitesnake - Still of the Night

This is a live performance by the British hard rock/metal band Whitesnake performing one of their classic songs "Still of the Night". The song was released in 1987 on their self-entitled album. It did fairly well in the charts, and in 2009 it was ranked the 27th best hard rock song by the VH1 network and its viewers.
The song kinda fuses the early blues vibe and influence with a more modern metal style. And that's just what it sounds like, you end up with this sweet hard rock song, with distorted guitars, pinch harmonics, awesome vocal performance and a sound that's both unique and totally familiar.
The song has also been stated to sound like the Zeppelin song "Black Dog", and I agree, but that's not a bad thing. First off, the riff from "Black Dog" does sound somewhat similar, but it is much more complicated than the riff in "Still of the Night". Besides what's wrong with drawing influence from Led Zeppelin, all 70's/80's bands should do that. There's influence and then plagiarism, and this is definitely just influence, well done Whitesnake.
It's a great song, and to this day it is still used as Whitesnake's encore at concerts, and with good reason, what an awesome way to end a show.
They really perform in this clip, and give 100 %. The fans are into it, and joins in on singing, the guitar parts rock, the melodic middle session rocks and David Coverdale does a fucking amazing job on the vocals. Truly an awesome performance.

Neil Young - Cinnamon Girl

Neil Young - Cinnamon Girl
Uploaded by PigLips. - Explore more music videos.
This is a performance from rock icon Neil Young playing his classic song "Cinnamon Girl". The song was released in 1969 on Young's album "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" which was also his first album with the backing band "Crazy Horse".
The song is known for it's sung harmony of Young's low-pitch voice, and on the original recording a second higher pitched voice sung by Danny Whitten. It is also famous for the catchy guitar riff that drives the song throughout. It is written in Double Drop D tuning on the guitars, and gives it the lower sound of the top and bottom strings on the guitar.
It's a great live performance, and Young performs 100 % and still does to this day, what a great performer and musician.

Robert Palmer Addicted to Love

This is a performance from 80's rock king Robert Palmer. The song was released in 1986 on Palmer's "Riptide" album, and got very popular due to a video featuring fashion models playing the instruments, and Palmer singing. A classic 80's music video, cheesy and corny. You can say that Palmer rose to success through videos very much the same way ZZ Top did. The song is known for it's catchy guitar riff and a drum opening in 7/4 rhythm, the rest of the song is in 4/4 rhythm. The song did very well in the charts.
It's a great performance, and everyone really grooves. The guitar solos are good, and the drummer really gets the audience going. A good performance, of a good song.

Velvet Revolver - Set Me Free

This is a live performance from 2005 by the American hard rock group Velvet Revolver. The song was released in 2003 and originally appeared on the soundtrack for the Hulk film of the same year. The single then also made it onto the bands debut album "Contraband".
The main riff of the song was made by Slash, and it's what drives the song. On the record version there's two rather complicated guitar solos done by Slash.
This live version is really good because the band really goes nuts and gives 100 %. Slash is playing like crazy, and doing a fantastic job with the song, he even throws the guitar behind his head for a chunk of the performance, and makes the guitar scream at the end until the last chord is played. Dave Kushner even does a little solo at one point.
This is a pretty sweet hard rock song, and the band rocks it with this performance.

Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love

The song "Whole Lotta Love" is a song by the legendary band Led Zeppelin. It was released in 1969 on the band's 2nd album titled "Led Zeppelin II". The song has appeared on many lists, and is considered one of the best hard rock songs ever.
The song is influenced by a lot of different blues singers and songs. Mainly the song "You Need Love" recorded by Muddy Waters, written by Willie Dixon. The lyrics in the two songs were very similar, and in the end Willie Dixon ended up suing the band. They agreed on a cash settlement, and that was the end of that. Plant has stated that he felt that the lyrics and the song was so far back in time that it was just influence, and not copying. He has also stated that Page's guitar riff was there before the lyrics, and that the guitar riff was the origin of the song, and they came up with the lyrics later. Plant then said that everyone borrows lyrics and stuff like that, but you only get caught when you're successful.[1]
The song has a very unique and different construction. It starts off with Page's riff which also descends into the main verse. Then at about 3:02 into the song, it goes into a more jazzy feel, John Bonham plays a jazzy feel type of thing on the drums, and it goes into a very weird section with Plant moaning and screaming and Page playing his guitar with a bow, this section is by many fans referred to as the "Orgasm Section" of the song.
Below is a list of some of the lists the song has been on, and the ranks it has gotten on those lists. I really think this is one of the best, if not the best hard rock songs ever. Truly a great song, and a great recording and construction.

Lenny Kravitz - Are You Gonna Go My Way

This is a performance Lenny Kravitz and his band at the 2007 Live Earth concert. They perform the classic song "Are You Gonna Go My Way", a song by Kravitz released in 1993 as a single. It's a great straight forward rock 'n' roll song driven by an awesome riff that just drives the song. This shows that Kravitz is a true rock artist who knows his stuff and can write great rock 'n' roll songs. The song has become hugely successful and popular, and has been covered by several artists, such as; Metallica, Tom Jones and Robbie Williams to name a few.
It's a great performance from Live Earth, they really give all they have, and deliver a solid performance of a kick-ass song.
The single also spawned one of the best performance music videos ever. I'm not a big fan of that kind of music videos, but this is just done so well, I have to salute it. It basically takes place in a vertical room with lights in the sealing blinking in various patterns through out the performance. Lenny plays a Gibson Flying V and looks cool, and so does the rest of the band. That's the thing about this music video, they all look cool. There's also some great shots of fans jumping around going wild. It's a great video, and by many considered a land mark of 90's music videos. The music video is embeded beneath.

The Doors - Wild Child

This is a video from the classic late 60's band The Doors. It's a video consisting of footage of some native-American kids spliced together with studio footage of The Doors recording the song "Wild Child". I don't know if it was a fan made video or an official video.
The song Wild Child is built up quite simple, with one riff pretty much driving the song, and then changing when the song breaks into the chorus. The riff is mainly a guitar riff played by Robby Krieger, but a Hammond B3 organ is also added, to give the song that trippy 60's feel. Robby also plays a psychedelic bottle neck slide that just fits the song perfectly.
The song was released as a single in December of 1968, but it was a B-side to the song "Touch Me".
Below is a little clip from the A-side to the single.

It's a really good stoner song, with that delightful 60's psychedelic sound. A great video, and a really good song.
